Brighton’s busted pier

Living with a broken, dilapidated wreck on your doorstep is an interesting experience. Half of me wonders why it hasn’t been pulled down as a safety hazard, whereas the other half is glad that it’s there because – really – it’s quite beautiful.

It’s also been interesting watching the poor old West Pier deteriorate over the years, especially the curious camaraderie that emerged when it caught fire the second time. Scores of people gathered along the seafront to bid a final farewell to this curious staple of Brightonian life, which had served no purpose than that of a curiosity since it was crippled in 1987.
